CS Amina:World Cup trophy visit is a testimony of cordial relationship between Kenya and FIFA

Cabinet Secretary for Sports Dr Amina Mohamed has said the Nairobi tour of the world’s most coveted World Cup trophy is a clear indication of great relationship between Kenya and world football governing body,FIFA.

This is the third time the iconic silverware is returning to the country after previous visits in 2010 to much fanfare ahead of the first World Cup on an African soil, in South Africa and in 2018 before Russia hosted 32 of the world’s best football nations.

The CS who reiterated her commitment towards putting in place a condusive environment aimed at supporting the growth of the game lauded tour organisers Coca-Cola for prioritising Kenya as one of the trophy destinations.

“The FIFA World Cup trophy tour is an extraordinary opportunity for Kenyans to take in a piece of football history and share their passion for the sport with each other and hopefully most of them will come out in large numbes to enjoy this rare previlege. We are in good books with FIFA and negotiations are still underway to lift our suspension from football activities. The progress is encouraging and all will be well” noted the CS

As one of the most recognised sports symbols in the world and a priceless icon, the original FIFA World Cup trophy can only be touched and held by a very select group of people, which includes former winners and heads of state.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to receive the trophy at State House on Thursday ahead of public display on Friday at the KICC where thousands of football lovers will get a chance to take a souvenir picture.

Football Kenya Federation Transition Committee member in charge of leagues and competitions Ali Amour on his part underscored the overwhelming passion for football in the country adding that with proper structures in place,Kenya can qualify for this prestigious competition in the future.

“This is a unique moment. The tour covers 51 countries and only 32 of them compete in the World Cup with the remaining 18 countries being selected due to their passion for football so Kenya is among a few privileged.I can say we have been at World Cup through blood when Divock Origi who is the son to former Kenyan International Mike Okoth played for Belgium in 2014 in Brasil .As part of the current office running football, we are committed to fill the gaps which have been existing before through poor Admnistration” said Ali Amour

In 2010, the late President Mwai Kibaki was the only one allowed to touch the trophy when the trophy toured Kenya ahead of the first World Cup an African soil hosted in South Africa.

Made of solid gold and weighing 6.142kg, the trophy depicts two human figures holding the globe aloft with its current design dating back to 1974.

The 2022 Fifa world Cup will be held in Qatar from November 21 to December 18. It will be the first World Cup to be staged in the Middle East.

Africa will be represented by five nations, namely, Cameroon, Ghana, Morocco, Tunisia and Senegal.
