Thursday February 28, 2019 - Deputy President William Ruto surprised Kenyans on Thursday when he said no money has been lost in the construction of two dams in Kerio Valley. Despite overwhelming evidence showing Sh 21 billion was looted by senior officers in the construction of phantom dams, Ruto said these claims made by Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI), George Kinoti, that Sh21 billion had been stolen, are a “flat lie”. Ruto, who was speaking during the launch of a report on the state of the Judiciary in Nairobi on Thursday, said it is only Sh 7 billion that may have been stolen. “You have heard, for example, that the Government has lost Sh21 billion in Kimwarer and Arror dams, which is a flat lie.” “The money in question is about Sh7 billion and for every coin that has been paid, we have a guarantee that no money will be lost because we are a responsible Government,” Ruto said. Ruto’s remarks came as Kinoti maintained that money was stolen by senior Government officials including 4 Cabinet Secretaries and a number of Principal Secretaries. President Uhuru Kenyatta, who attended the launch, was amused by Ruto’s remarks and cameras showed him looking down for most of the DP’s speech and when he rose to speak, the Head of State avoided the topic.
