Former national team Harambeee Stars striker Dennis Oliech has launched a foundation that will nurture young talents from the underprivileged in the society, and create social-economic awareness in the communities together.
The 37 year old who retired from international football two years ago after featuring for record Kenya Premier League champions Gor Mahia for a short period is hoping to use the new initiative in mentoring the upcoming talent.
“Coming from a humble background love for my community and Kenya at large has always been immense and now its time to give back to the community, its time to do more and touch the lives of many Kenyan youths who would love to be like me and to even achieve more than I did in all sporting activities” noted Oliech
The former Auxerre forward is regarded as a football icon in Kenya having started playing for the national team at the age of 17 in 2002 against Nigeria.
He made 76 appearances for the national team becoming Kenya’s all-time goal scorer, with 34 goals before ending active soccer involvement in 2016.
Born in Dagoretti corner,Des as he is commonly known began playing for Dagoretti Santos in his early age before moving to Mathare United. He then moved to Qatar, France and Dubai for his international professional football.
The foundation is open to anyone with a passion for football since it does not have a capping for age.
The foundation also carries out frequent tours in the country’s 47 counties as part of Oliech’s peace ambassador initiative. The peace ambassador tours are one way the foundation hopes to harness sports as a uniting factor, identifying and nurturing talent
He has joined the league of former Kenya captain and ex-teammate Victor Wanyama and Johanna Omollo who are already running foundations.
