An officer from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Mombasa was Monday evening killed in a shootout with suspected robbers in Taveta town, Taita Taveta County.

The officer was in the company of his colleagues while pursuing two people linked to a robbery in Mombasa that was caught on CCTV cameras.

The new Taita Taveta County Police Commander Saidi Mohammed Kiprotich told KBC on phone that the suspects shot dead the officer at around 4.30pm before disappearing in the crowd after the suspects’ attempt to escape in a motor cycle aborted.

Kiprotich however could not release the details of the slain officer until the next of kin is notified. He said the suspects appeared to have known too well the officers from Mombasa who were involved in a manhunt for them.
