Equity tactician Maina happy after going seven games unbeaten

Equity Bank Ladies basketball team head coach David Maina is satisfied with his team’s performance after going seven games unbeaten in the women basketball Premier League.

Maina, who spoke after crashing Western Delight 86-21 in an away game played in Kamamega, said the results show the growth in the team as they prepare for the African Zone Five.

“I am really satisfied with the performance of the team; the new players are bonding well with the rest of the team. I expect the team to be ready by the time we go to Zone Five to compete with big teams,” Maina added.

The bankers dominated all the four quarters taking an early lead of 25-4 in the first quarter before another massive win of 22-5 in the second quarter. After the break, the defending champions looked more prepared winning 17-6 and 22-6 in the third and fourth quarter respectively.

Belinda Akoth showed her powers in scoring emerging top scorer with 17 points followed by her teammate Cynthia Maweru with 14 while Hellen Sinoya scored six for Western Region based club.

Meanwhile, Storms women basketball team had an enjoyable weekend winning their two matches.

Storms, last year’s semi finalists, hammered UON Dynamites 48-26 on Saturday at Nyayo gymnasium.

Storms -under head coach Abel Nson- dominated all the quarters winning 20-11, 10-02, 14-10, 04-03 with Deede Were emerging top scorer with 10 points.

In their second match on Sunday against Eagle Wings at the same venue, Storms narrowly won 49-45 with Cellia Atieno scoring 18 points for Storms.

The game started off in what could be seen as unpredictable game when they shared points in the first quarter scoring 11 points each. Storms showed some tactics winning narrowly in the remaining three quarters winning 11-09, 13-12, and 14-13.

“I am positively impressed by my girls after playing on how we were supposed to play since we have started getting our rhythm. Despite that we didn’t do well offensively which we haven’t found rhythm because of our inconsistency,” Storms head coach Abel Nson said.

Elsewhere, Blades head coach Tony Ochieng blamed poor attitude for the loss for their 48-46 defeat to Umoja in the men basketball league.

“We were simply outplayed in all departments. We missed four free throws; it’s a wake up call to my team since we need the right attitude for us to be able to perform,” Ochieng said.

Blades have so far played seven games, losing four.
