Fish cage farming to boost economic growth in Busia County - KBC

The economic fortunes of Busia County have began to look up following the harvesting of 1.1 tons of fish,  thanks to fish cage farming in Lake Victoria.

The county government inviting investors to the region, pledged to inject additional resources to ensure value addition and increased opportunities for the locals.

It’s geographical location next to lake Victoria, makes fish farming the major economic activity in Busia county.

Following this, the county government has embarked on massive investment in fish cage farming with the view of making it  the leading revenue generator in the county.

Speaking during the launch of the project at Mulukoba beach ,former Minister for Regional Development Fred Gumo said he has opted to invest in fish cage farming to enlighten the community on the viability of the trade.

He however urged community members to adopt the spirit of cooperation that would make it more affordable for them to invest in fish cages.

Gumo also urged companies that supply fish feeds to lower their prices to make it more affordable for farmers.

Budalangi  MP Raphael Wanjala noted there is  rapid depletion of fish in Lake  Victoria occasioned by use of poor fishing methods and toxic waters along the lakes source. He noted that there is urgent need to arrest the situation.

Fish cage farming involves keeping fish in cages. It is a practice that is quickly gaining popularity owing to the fact that fish are reared in their natural habitat and can be raised, tended and harvested in a small area.
