Floods Update: Death toll rises to 132

The raging floods caused by heavy rains in various parts of the country have seen 132 people lose their lives.

However, the government now says it’s providing the necessary relief assistance to help restore the livelihoods of all those affected as it continues to monitor the situation.

Speaking while delivering an update, government spokesman, Cyrus Oguna said the government in collaboration with other actors including county governments, the Kenya Red Cross Society, World Food Programme and humanitarian agencies are working to assist the affected communities with food and non-food items.

Oguna said a government multi-agency team is also assessing the extent of damage on infrastructure and undertaking repairs.

“As Government, we are providing the necessary relief assistance to help restore livelihoods of all those affected as we continue to monitor the situation.” He said.

He said the flooding has affected 32 counties Lamu Kwale Mombasa Kilifi TanaRiver Taita Taveta,Mandera, Wajir, Turkana, Garissa, Samburu Isiolo, Marsabit, Makueni, Kitui, Machakos Embu Baringo, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Siaya, Kisii TransNzoia, Busia, Bungoma Meru and Tharaka Nithi.

He added that approximately 330 people have been adversely affected and approximately 17,000 others displaced.

” Approx 330 people adversely affected, 17,000 displaced, 132 lost their lives, an undetermined number marooned/cut off.Over 11,000 livestock swept away. Undetermined acreage of farmlands submerged.Crops of unknown value damaged/destroyed.” He said.
