The Nairobi County Government has suspended the ban on public transport vehicles from accessing the Nairobi Central business district until further consultations.

In a statement Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuzi Sonko says “I have noted with deep concern the plight of Nairobi residents as a result of the ban, and hereby announce that the full implementation of this directive has been suspended with immediate effect.”

The decision to suspend the ban will now facilitate further consultation with all affected parties, in order to find a lasting solution to the problem of vehicle congestion in the City.

Sonko says many innocent commuters, including senior citizens and those with health challenges requiring emergency medical attention, expectant mothers and children traveling with their parents, all suffered untold inconvenience, something he says is regrettable.

The statement further adds that it is necessary to have contingent measures before enforcement of such key decisions.

The Governor says he met PSV operators Tuesday morning to deliberate on an acceptable solution adding that he will continue to hold discussions with them during the coming days.

Sonko has further urged those with private vehicles to consider car-pooling  by providing transport to those without and who live in the same neighborhood.

He said the ultimate goal is to de-congest Nairobi city as well as make public transport appealing and organized.
