Illegal miners given until February to legalize operations

The Ministry of Petroleum and Mining has given both local and foreign miners until end of January, 2019 to legalize their operations.

Mining Cabinet Secretary John Munyes says unregistered miners were posing unfair competition as well as smuggling precious minerals hence denying the exchequer revenue.

Munyes said his ministry is in talks with colleagues in the Ministry of Interior to ensure that the law is enforced and mining policies implemented.

The miners have urged the national government to assess the environmental impacts caused by chemicals being used by some miners even as the state collects revenue from mining activities.
