IPOA to investigate claims of assault on University students

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into allegations of police brutality meted at JKUAT students on Monday.

The Authority has dispatched its Rapid Response Unit to investigate the claims with a view of unraveling the facts and to hold accountable any culpable Officers.

In a statement, IPOA says it will investigate the allegations of use of force, use of firearms and any other misconduct by the Police Officers.

The Authority expressed its disappointment towards the unprofessional manner in which police officers handled the matter.

IPOA has also raised the matter with the Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i who has pledged to support the investigations and recommendations.

In view of this, the Authority has appealed to eye witnesses to provide any related information to its investigating officers.

According to IPOA, members of the National Police Service were caught on camera assaulting students from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

The students had blocked the Thika Superhighway in protest against crime and insecurity around the university when they were allegedly assaulted.

IPOA which is mandated to hold the police accountable to the public in the performance of their duties has assured that the investigations will be impartial fair and independent and no one will be victimized.
