Karua promises to work with civil society to enhance governance



Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party presidential running mate Martha Karua has promised to work with civil society to enhance governance in the country should the coalition form the next government.

Karua said the civil society is a representative of the people noting that her candidature and that her of Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party flag bearer is for human rights.

Addressing civil society groups under the Angaza Movement Friday morning, Karua pointed out the need for laws to speed up court cases of leaders who violate the constitution.

“Any serious government will realise there is a gap it can never fill; citizens gap can never be filled by the government. You cannot treat citizens as the enemy; we will be ready for your questions, we cannot always smile when you ask but we will answer,” she said.

Angaza movement civil society representatives John Githongo and Dr. Abraham Rugo of Okoa Uchumi coalition urged Kenyans to vote for leaders of integrity.

The civil society is concerned that successive leaderships continue to make decisions for citizens like raising taxes in disregard of the welfare of citizens.

Elsewhere, the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition Presidential aspirant Raila Odinga says he will deploy international best practice to solve the land question across the country.

Addressing his supporters at a meeting in Trans Nzoia County Friday morning, the ODM leader said should he win elections in August, he will roll out properly structured modern housing schemes across the country, where apart from benefiting from social amenities that will be put up by the government, residents in the said schemes will be given land for commercial agriculture.

He said the residents will be allowed to work in the said farms and later earn good returns depending on the quantity of their produce. Raila said the move will ensure all Kenyans acquire land, and at the same time boost food security.

Raila at the same time announced a raft of measures to improve the livelihoods of Trans Nzoia residents among them protection of the Cherangany and Mount Elgon water towers to ensure residents access clean water, improved road infrastructure, setting up a local fertilizer manufacturing plant for the benefit of farmers in the region known to be one of Kenya’s food basket, among others.

Raila said he will address poverty, disease and ignorance to ensure Kenya becomes a developed nation.
