Kenya storm Copa Africa quarters after Mozambique win




Hosts Kenya stormed to the quarter finals of the Copa Coca-Cola Africa Cup Tournament after thrashing Mozambique 3-0 in their second match of the second edition of the championship which kicked off on Monday at Mpesa Foundation Academy in Thika.

Sensational striker Fredrick Onyango was the hero after netting a first half hat trick to send the defending champions to the last eight of the four-day tourney.

In the opening match which was graced by the Sports and Heritage Cabinet Secritary Amina Mohammed alongside her counterparts Prof.George Magoha of Education and Prof. Margret Kobia from Youth and Gender docket, Kenya were stunned 3-1 by Zimbabwe in a soaked grounds.

Kenya will face Botswana in the quarter finals of the tourney which has attracted ten countries from diverse Confederation of African Football (CAF) zones, including Cecafa, Wafu, Cosafa and Cosafa.

In the inaugural edition held in Nakuru last year, Kenya claimed a clean sweep after St. Anthony’s Boys Kitale and Moi Girls Nangili overcame Nigeria and Zimbabwe in the finals to clinch the boys and girls honours respectively.

This year’s edition is only featuring boy’s category unlike last year where Kenya and Zimbabwe provided girls team with CS Amina urging the organisers to consider the gender equality.

Other countries featuring in this year’s edition include Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Others are Zambia, Namibia, Uganda, Angola and Botswana.

However, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso pulled out in the last hour due to unknown reasons.
