Ksh 110M modern slaughterhouse commissioned in Samburu

Construction of a modern slaughterhouse has been commissioned at Nomotio area in Samburu central sub-county.

While speaking in Maralal town, the county’s Agricultural Chief Officer Ruben Lemunyate said the construction work is being sponsored by European Union and Kenyan government at a cost Ksh110M.

Lemunyate said the modern slaughterhouse will enhance livestock market as 250 animals will be slaughtered on a daily basis.

“With assistance from sponsors from European Union and Kenya government we want to construct a slaughterhouse where 250 livestock from different areas across the county will be slaughtered on a daily basis,” he said.

Upon completion, the chief officer said the facility will be equipped with equipment among them freezers, packaging machines and a lorry for packaging and exporting meet to outside market.

Lemunyate said the project will contribute towards strengthening of the county’s economy through the creation of business and employment opportunities in livestock keeping.

He said the county government will strengthen a nearby cooperative which had been dormant to come up with the best ways to use skin, horns, and hoofs to generate income.

A section of residents want youths from the county to be given a priority when it comes to employment upon completion of the project.

However, they are hopeful that they will slaughter an increased number of animals on a day as compared to past years where they used a small slaughterhouse in Maralal town.
