Friday March 1, 2019 - A section of Luhya community leaders have castigated President Uhuru Kenyatta for sacking Sport Cabinet Secretary, Richard Echesa, and replacing him with Education CS, Amina Mohamed. Amina’s docket was taken by Prof George Magoha who until his appointment was the chairman of the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC). Following the sacking of Echesa, Luhya community leaders led by Mumias East MP, Benjamin Washiali, accused Uhuru of being ungrateful to the Luhya people who supported his Presidency in 2017. “It was tough selling the Jubilee agenda in Western and Mr Echesa was among people who went out of their way to propagate Jubilee and create in-routes for Mr Kenyatta to access the region", Washiali said. He said they remained worried “because Mr Kenyatta has shown that he doesn’t value us”. The lawmaker, who referred to Mr Echesa as "one of our own", went on to say that Mr Kenyatta should have invited Luhya leaders to a meeting to explain his decision and prepare them for it. Washiali, who is also the Jubilee Party Chief Whip, acknowledged that Mr Echesa had shortcomings but said the President should have accepted and learnt to live with them. “He (Mr Echesa) has his own people and commands a large following, not only in western but also across the country. I know these people will make their own decisions,” he said.
