The Kenya Airports Authority has revealed plans of the national government to implement the second phase of Malindi International Airport expansion.

According to KAA, the Malindi International Airport needs at least 259 hectares of land to enable the airport handle bigger commercial aircrafts, as well as direct international flights, hence increasing tourist arrivals.

The facility currently sits on 100.6 hectares of land, with the first phase of the expansion having covered expansion of the airport’s apron, construction of a car park and a 7.5-kilometer security fence.

The second phase of the expansion seeks to extend the runway from the current 1.5 kilometers to 2.5 kilometers and ensure security and safety of the facility.

Tenders for the expansion of the runway have already been advertised and awarded.
