NACADA given one week to withdraw miraa ban proposal

The push by the National Authority for Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA) to ban “muguka” has attracted outrage from small scale farmers in Embu County.

The farmers want the anti-drug abuse lobby to withdraw the plan saying it will adversely affect thousands of farmers who rely on the crop.

NACADA wants the stimulant plant banned arguing that it will help address the drug abuse menace affecting millions of youth in the country.

Its argument based on statistics that ostensibly indicate that muguka and alcohol abuse is among key substances that have ruined the lives of the youth.

It is a plan that appears to have rubbed local farmers the wrong way who are now threatening to seek legal redress to stop the plan.

Mbeere Embu Miraa cooperative Union chair Jerovasio Ekothee says NACADA was going against the government stand to declare miraa a cash crop which has seen thousands of farmers in Embu county benefit economically.

Farmers insist that the research carried out had showed that muguka was viable as a cash crop and the move by NACADA to ban Miraa will cripple Embu ounty’s economy which is currently boosted by miraa farming.
