Parliament to hold special sitting on nomination of EACC CEO

The National Assembly will on Tuesday hold a special sitting to among others consider the nomination of Twalib Mbarak as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ethics and anti-corruption commission.

Mbarak who was vetted last Friday by the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee promised to expedite corruption related cases and help the country exorcise the ghost of corruption.

On Tuesday the National Assembly will have its say on the ongoing war on corruption when it considers the nomination of Twalib Mbarak as the CEO of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

The Justice and Legal Affairs Committee which has finalized its report on the vetting of the nominee says if approved, Mbarak will be tasked with revamping the anti-graft body, whose image has been battered over the years.

EACC has also often been accused of failing to deal decisively with graft.

When he appeared before the Justice and legal affairs committee last Friday, Mbarak promised to restore public confidence in the commission as well as remain objective in the quest for a graft free country.

If approved, Mbarak will replace Halakhe Waqo who has served his non-renewable six-year term at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

Elsewhere, Amani leader Musalia Mudavadi is now pushing for consensus building ahead of a possible constitutional referendum.

Speaking after hosting a group of former Central Kenya lawmakers at his Nairobi home, Mudavadi said certain clauses in the 2010 constitution must be reviewed to make it responsive to the needs of Kenyans which can only be achieved through negotiations.

Amid speculations that the meeting had been called to discuss 2022 succession politics, Mudavadi and his visitors affirmed that the agenda was different.

Mudavadi disclosed that Monday’s deliberations bordered on pertinent issues affecting the country, especially the ongoing clamor to have the constitution amended.

The former DPM noted that they are pushing for dialogue on what the referendum will be about in the event it is held.

Speaking on behalf of the visiting team, Former Nyeri Senator Mutahi Kagwe said the referendum should not be about winners or losers and that the group wants to make its views known on the constitution review process.

They however maintained that the country’s supreme law must represent the interests of all citizens.
