People living with disability have been urged to pursue education

People living with disability in Samburu County have been urged to pursue education in the various learning institutions to acquire skills that will assist them in future.

“I am asking people living with disability especially youths to wake up and enroll in learning institutions to pursue education that will make them independent in future,” David Lenakwapusi advised.

Lenakwapusi said it is only through education that people living with disability will help others and prove to the community that disability is not inability.

While speaking at Sherp orphanage in Maralal town Samburu County during celebrations to commemorate the International day for people living with disability nominated MCA Osman Adan Dube said he is pursuing a special bursary from the County Government to benefit people living with disability in the county.

“People living with disability have been experiencing problems in accessing bursary funds and now we want a special bursary for them, we discussed in the assembly, held talks with CEC in charge of education  and now we want it done in the right way,” he said.

Meanwhile delayed processing of identification cards for people living with disability has also affected their ability to seek for special services and compete for job opportunities.

Medical staff serving at various health facilities in the county has been urged to facilitating people living with disability to get their identification cards.

“We want people living with disability to be identified and without an identification card, a person living with disability cannot get a job or access other important services.”Osman said.

They accused the National government of taking too long to process or reprocess identification cards for people living with disability.

Dube said there ought to be quick processing of identification cards for people living with disability from pastoralist communities.

“This is a County where migration is part of our culture and you find that processing a card for someone who migrated becomes a problem, it delays for long, we ask the Government to help us solve this so that we can move together in development,” he urged.
