Kenya’s earnings from sisal exports hit KSh1.25 billion in Q3 2021, with the price of a kilo hitting a high of $1.6, compared to $1.49 for the same period last year.

Data from the Fibre Crops Directorate shows that despite the high earnings, export volumes fell 9% to hit6,926 metric tonnes, compared to 7,617 metric tonnes for the same period last year. The fall in volumes was occasioned by the prevailing drought experienced this year.

During the quarter, the sisal fibre was exported to 27 destinations, including Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, China, Ghana, and Spain.

In the first half of this year, the earnings hit KSh2.45 billion, a 10.96% increase from last year’s KSh2.2 billion (H1 2020). The rise was occasioned by rebounding prices in key export markets. Export volumes of sisal fibre hit 14,822.4 tonnes in the review period, a 9.5% increase from 13,533.8 tonnes in H1 2020.
