SwypePay, a Kenyan digital payment firm developed by Terra Softworks, aims to signup and support 1 million businesses in Africa by 2024 despite being hit hard by COVID-19 this year.

SwypePay, which offers SMEs in Africa a payment platform to help them accept payments instore or online via a web interface and a mobile app, also aims to impact the lives of over 3 million people in Africa and around the globe through its service offerings and growing developer ecosystem.

“For us, it’s been tough since we have clients in the service industry, however, it has also tested the robustness of our platform. This is because we had to pivot and use our platform to distribute meal vouchers to vulnerable communities with the Food4education,” said Muriuki Collins, Founder and CEO, SwypePay. “But generally, in the wake of cashless payments as a preferred payment option, fintechs will thrive.”

With a focus on (Small and Medium Enterprises) SMEs across Africa, estimated to be about 400,000 in Kenya (SMEs) and 90,000 developers on the continent, SwypePay aims to end their pain by offering a superior payment experience coupled with thousands of merchant services into a one-stop-shop experience coupled with clever AI technology to help merchants across Africa to scale their businesses easily.

Some clients SwypePay has worked with include The Food4Educaton Foundation, Tamarind Group, Virtual City, Coca Cola amongst many others.

SwypePay is powering trade in an African environment that has numerous hurdles such as access and speed to market, by offering a unique blend of business tools in the hands of any small business.

“When we look at trade, we see 3 components: The commodity, people and value or currency. SwypePay exists to enhance and simplify these three aspects of trade by growing digital marketplaces that connect people across the continent, with a superior payment experience and free e-commerce shop for businesses. Secondly, by providing access to financial services through payment processing and access to business loans via our bank partners and finally, enabling a connection between businesses and their customers with social media marketing and SMS communication to keep in touch with their customers.”

SwypePay works with Developer Hubs and Developer Communities, IoT partners e.g Vending Systems, ATMs etc, Capacity building partners (Data, Security and Scaling partners), banks and financial services partners and platforms in the transport and logistics sector such as Taxify, Sendy, Uber among others.

Four years ago, SwypePay, launched as an NFC-powered mobile payments platform but had to pivot after telcom giant Safaricom launched a similar NFC-payments platform dubbed M-PESA 1Tap. SwypePay then had a wallet that users can load money via credit card or M-Pesa for payments at events or POS terminals.
