KCB closed in on a third National Sevens Circuit title following yesterday’s Main Cup victory at the Christie Sevens, the penultimate round of the six-legged series.
The 12-7 win against Nakuru RFC in a pulsating final at the RFUEA ground saw the bankers maintain top spot with 94 points.
At least a fifth-place finish (13 points) at the last leg, Driftwood Sevens slated for Mombasa this weekend will see them claim the overall title since second-placed Mwamba, who are currently on 84 points, cannot surpass that tally even if they are victorious at the season-ending event.
In their Main Cup triumph, which had to be decided in sudden death, KCB got onto the scoresheet through two tries and one conversion, while Wanyore, as Nakuru are fondly known, managed one try and a conversion.
The sides went to the break tied 7-7 after Monate Akuei scored a converted try for Nakuru before KCB restored parity through Kenya Under-20 youngster Geoffrey Okwach.
The game’s decisive try was delivered by KCB’s Elphas Adunga.
On their way to the final, KCB had to toil, coming from behind to eliminate Mwamba with a 17-12 victory while Nakuru also claimed a come-from-behind 19-14 win over Impala Saracens.
Meanwhile, Impala Saracens settled for bronze after defeating Mwamba 21-14 as Homeboyz claimed a fifth-place finish with a 24-0 win against Nondescripts.
Christie Sevens hosts Kenya Harlequin were crowned Challenge Trophy champions thanks to a 31-5 triumph over Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad as Northern Suburbs finished 13th after beating Egerton Wasps 21-12.
Menengai Oilers’ dreams of clinching the overall title were shattered after the Nakuru outfit picked a paltry 10 points.
