Uganda's longest-serving Bank Governor Mutebile dies at Nairobi hospital

Uganda’s longest-serving Governor of the Bank Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile has passed on.

Mutebile 72, an economist and banker died Sunday morning at Nairobi Hospital, where he was hospitalized since December 31, 2021, due to complications related to diabetes.

“It is with profound sadness that the Bank of Uganda announces the death of its gallant Governor, Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile. Prof. Tumusiime-Mutebile passed away at the Nairobi Hospital on Sunday 23 January 2022 at around 0500 hrs” read a statement announcing his death.

“Further announcements will be made in due course. The Bank of Uganda family, together with his natural family and friends, joins the nation in mourning his loss. May His Soul Rest in Eternal Peace” it added.

He had been in and out of hospital in recent years. He served as the governor of the Bank of Uganda, the central bank of Uganda from 2001 until his death in 2022.
