President Uhuru Kenyatta has officially handed over the petition to dissolve the Taita Taveta County Government to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The President sent the petition to IEBC to verify the signatures of voters supporting the petition which was initiated by Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja over what he termed as harassment from the Members of the County Assembly.

The petition seeking the dissolution of the county assembly was formally received by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati says they will verify signatures in the petition by Samboja over the next 5 days before giving a report.

Chebukati elaborated they will scrutinize details of the signatories to establish if they correspond with those in the register of voters.

According to the Principal Administrative Secretary in the office of the President, Kennedy Kihara, the petition will be successful if it 10 per cent of 150 thousand registered voters in Taita Taveta County have signed it.

Samboja kicked off a signature collection exercise to mobilize support for the dissolution of the county in July this year after he disagreed with the MCAs on the Ksh 5.6 billion budget for the 2019/20 financial year and refused to approve budget estimates.

In October the MCAs went ahead to impeach Samboja on accusations of gross misconduct, but he survived after Senators found the allegations against him insufficient.

Senators recommended mediation to solve the impasse between the Governor and MCAs.
