CS Mucheru orders probe into MPesa services outage



According to the telecommunications provider, however, the services are now back to normal.


Information and Communication Technology CS Joe Mucheru has instructed the Communications Authority (CA) to liaise with Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) to investigate Mpesa services outage experienced on Saturday and part of Sunday. 

In a statement to newsrooms on Sunday, the CS further instructed the two bodies to forward to his ministry a comprehensive report detailing remedial measures that Safaricom will take to prevent future outages.

The CS at the same time asked users of mobile money services to always have alternatives in case of such disruptions.

“Even as we ensure mobile service providers give uninterrupted services, we urge mobile money users to have redundancies to ensure continued services,” Added the statement.

He added mobile money transfer across different networks in Kenya is now fully operational.

“Subscribers can now move money in their wallets across different mobile money service providers,” he said.

Safaricom said Saturday that the outage was caused by hitches affecting its database degradation.

“”We regret to notify our customers and partners that M-Pesa services are currently unavailable due to a database degradation leading to loss of service. Our engineers are are working to restore services as soon as possible.”
