– Luiz made two errors directly leading to goals for Manchester City
– The Brazilian claimed full responsibility for the loss after the game
– His contract is on the verge of running out at the Emirates, with a new deal yet to be agreed
Arsenal centre back David Luiz took full responsibility for his team’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City at the Etihad on Wednesday, June 17 as the Premier League finally resumed after more than 100 days.
The Brazilian’s sending off summed up his error-strewn return to action, and he was bold enough to admit his role in the crushing defeat.
Notably, he was responsible for City’s first goal as a misjudged ball allowed Raheem Sterling in behind to power a shot past Bernd Leno, who had made a string of crucial saves to keep the match level earlier.
“It’s my fault,” the 33-year-old said. “The team did well, especially with 10 men. The coach is amazing, all the players are amazing, it was my fault,” he said after the game.
The 33-year-old’s contract runs out in one month but he insisted coach Mikel Arteta still had plans for him
“I want to be here. The coach knows. He wants me to stay.”
He joined Arsenal last summer from Chelsea in a move that was initially thought to be the solution to Arsenal’s defensive problems due to Luiz’s leadership qualities at the back.
In the City game, Arteta picked Pablo Mari ahead of Luiz but the Spaniard was taken off after 24 minutes with injury.
Luiz also seemed to suggest his performances were down to the fact that he was yet to decide his future, with his contract fast running out.
“All about my contract, if I stay here or not. I have 14 days to be here and that’s it. I should have tried to decide my future as early as possible, but I didn’t. I don’t want to use that as an alibi or excuse, it’s my fault – that’s it. I love to be here. That’s why I continue to train hard,”
Arteta however played down Luiz’s howlers, as he believes the best is yet to come from him.
“My opinion has not changed from the moment I joined the team and it won’t change because of a difficult performance tonight.” Arteta said.
