Four more suspects were on Thursday arrested in connection with electronic fraud targeting the IT systems of several Kenyan saccos.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) says it arrested the men, identified as Leonard Nganga, Stephen Mathenge, Hiram Kiragu and Alex Mutuku, bringing the total to 13 suspects so far held in the Sh70 million heist.
The four are set to be arraigned in court once police finish their investigations.
Two weeks ago, nine suspects among them Safaricom staff, interns, agents and a Ugandan were nabbed by detectives from the Serious Crimes Unit over the alleged crimes.
They are believed to have defrauded several saccos, according to the police.
Many saccos are believed to have been hit including Safaricom Sacco, Bamburi Sacco, Stima Sacco and others which authorities did not name.
Police also recovered several passports with the suspects.
Officers are yet to reveal the charges to be preferred against the suspects, only confirming that they were arrested for electronic fraud.
The arrest of Safaricom staff, interns and agents comes just days after the telco revealed in its 2018 sustainability report that it dismissed 43 employees in the year to March for fraud related incidents, a drop from the 52 fired the previous year.
