The government has embarked on a process of reclaiming thirty hectares of land belonging to the Nairobi City Park which has for decades been grabbed by private developers.

Environment Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko said the intended rehabilitation of Nairobi City Park into a modern city park will improve the quality of the site making the environment safe for visitors while respecting its natural and cultural uniqueness.

Nairobi City Park located in Nairobi’s parkland area, is one of the Kenya’s oldest urban gardens  which has been misused and neglected for decades.

The park which was initially 90 hectares has now been reduced to only 60 hectares due to human and housing encroachment, pollution, poaching and illegal logging in the park.

CS Tobiko said the historic park is set for a dramatic transformation and that upon completion, Nairobi residents will be free to visit the park, relax, picnic and take leisurely walks.

The exercise will involve environmental improvement, landscaping and creation of new facilities. In the proposed design, once complete the park will have an amphitheater, swimming pool, football pitch, food courts and jogging tracks among other social and income generating facilities.

The park which will be managed by the Kenya Forest Service is in the process of being fenced off to enhance security.
