The government of Kenya has distanced itself from remarks by Starehe MP and musician Charles Njagua, popularly known as Jaguar, who had threatened to forcefully evict foreign traders doing business in Nairobi.

Reacting to a viral video of the MP threatening to flush out the traders whom he accused of taking over jobs and businesses meant for Kenyan citizens, the government reassured the foreigners they would not be evicted from the country.

In a statement sent to newsrooms on Tuesday, June 25, Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna clarified the remarks made by the Starehe MP did not reflect the government's position.

"The attention of the government has been drawn to a video clip that is circulating in the social media. In the clip, a political leader is asking foreigners who are engaged in business in his area of representation to close their businesses and vacate the country.
We wish to state that this is not the position of the Government of the republic of Kenya, and we denounce the comments carried in the video in the strongest term possible. Such comments are unfortunate and have no place in today's globalised environment," the statement read.
