KenGen Set to Partner with South Sudan in Geothermal Power Exploration
Kenya’s leading top Energy generating Company, KenGen has expressed its intention to share expertise and vast experience in renewable energy power production with Kenya's neighboring country, South Sudan. This was agreed upon when the company hosted South Sudan President Salva Kiir and other top officials from South Sudan during a tour to its Olkaria geothermal fields. The South Sudan delegation is in Kenya to assess Kenya’s geothermal power projects. As part of the East Africa Power Pool Plan, South Sudan is looking into geothermal energy as not only a source of clean energy but also a vehicle to propel its rural electrification plan. KenGen is a leading geothermal power producer in the world. It is diversifying its revenue streams by offering other services in addition to energy generation. These services include drilling rigs, rig operation and maintenance, geothermal consulting services and exporting expertise to neighbouring countries. KenGen has also worked with other African governments such as Ethiopia, Djibouti, Rwanda, and Comoros in providing consultation services on clean energy generation. Recently they reached at an agreement with the Ethiopian government to provide consultation and drilling rig services at an estimated cost of KSh5.2 billion.Speaking during the tour, KenGen's Managing Director, Rebecca Miano said, “Our diverse expertise in energy production has become a point of reference, providing insights to various countries in Africa. “ In 2018, KenGen's gross revenue increased by 4 percent to reach KSh45.2 billion or thereabouts. It derives its income from electricity sale to Kenya Power which then supplies to consumers.
