Financial support from club patron Musalia Mudavadi has kick-started AFC Leopards’s drive towards owning a stadium.
On Friday, the former Vice-President, through his Musalia Mudavadi Centre, donated Sh633,000 to kick-start the process of Ingwe reclaiming the land that was given to them by the late President Daniel arap Moi in 1992.
The money, payable to the Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning, is required to pay requisite fees for processing the land’s papers.
The 20-acre piece of land is adjacent to the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani and had started suffering from encroachment by land grabbers.
Gor Mahia FC were also given the same size of land by the late president, but opted for alternative land in Embakasi along Old Airport Road after the management of Kasarani stadium took the land they were allocated.
“We want AFC Leopards to have a permanent home. Let the club leaders to do their strategic plan and make this sporting complex become a center of pride for the sporting fraternity in this country,” said the former Vice President.
“AFC Leopards has a massive following and is an inspiration for many young people. We want to be part of that journey with the young people as we continue supporting the club,” added Mudavadi, who is also the leader of Amani National Congress (ANC) Party.
Former AFC Leopards’ chairman Alfred Sambu, who was present at Friday’s function, said running football in Africa, particularly Kenya, is a very expensive affair.
“When I was the club chairman, Mudavadi was the patron and we worked very well together,” added the former Webuye West Member of Parliament, arguably the most successful AFC Leopards boss.
While unveiling the club’s strategic plan, AFC Leopards chairman, Dan Shikanda thanked Mudavadi for the support and assured the club members that Ingwe land title deed will be ready in a week’s time.
