New dawn for Wazito FC after key changes



Almost a month after National Super League (NSL) side, Wazito FC was acquired by a Swedish football fanatic, the team has been flying in the league with all attention heading its way. While waiting for the stadium promised by new owner, Ricard Badoer, Wazito FC has not left anything for chance losing only one of their first seven super league fixtures and winning the rest.

The team that was started as University of Nairobi Alumni movement is now second to Ushuru in the league, which has been branded Kenya’s most competitive. Changes that have occurred in the team have proved to be vital as the club has turned around, winning fans’ hearts from all over the country.

New coach Mohammed Ahmed’s main target is to gain promotion back to the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) and become the second coach to do so after his predecessor, Frank Ouna in the 2016/17 season. Wazito are also targeting to win the GOtv shield cup trophy as it is the easiest way to make it to continental football. The team also targets to one day lift the Confederation of African Football (CAF) club trophy.

According to Wazito FC captain, Dennis Gicheru, the team has short term as well as long term targets that they are all working to achieve with coach Ahmed and Badoer, a millionaire businessman based in Dubai. Gaining promotion to the KPL and winning the GOtv Cup are among the targets that Gicheru mentioned.

“We are currently working hard in terms of our main target to get back to the premier league. We are also aiming at the GOtv cup which is the easiest way to continental football. We are hopeful to make a mark in the GOtv tournament. ”

Gicheru, who is also a practicing lawyer, heaped praise at coach Ahmed saying that he is the best Coach for Wazito right now and also compared him to English Premier League side Manchester City’s Manager, Pep Guardiola.

“He is tactically very good. He is one of the best enthusiast of the Pep Guardiola style which is the (style) we are trying to bring in at Wazito and probably within the next few matches or months we will be the Manchester City of Kenya,” he with a light touch in an interview at K24.


Wazito FC have all eyes in Kenyan Football locked at them as they are expected to take advantage of positive changes at the club and achieve great things probably promotion to the KPL and continental football.

Wazito play Bidco United on Wednesday in the NSL at 3pm in Thika as they continue their quest for promotion to the KPL.
