New mixed-use apartments lift Coast premium tourism



Mt Kenya University founder and chairman Dr Simon Gicharu has invested in multi-million-shilling mixed-use apartments in the coastal town of Mombasa. The Nyali Golf View Residence is being viewed as a key plank in enhancing  Mombasa’s tourism market by meeting a niche accommodation taste in the tourist resort city.

The 13-storey building, located in Nyali estate, has upmarket class serviced apartments, a fitness centre, a restaurant, swimming pool and a penthouse.

Speaking during the official opening of the the Nyali Golf View Residence, Dr Gicharu said the project was initially meant to host MKU’s Mombasa campus, but changed course to offer residence and recreation services to meet the growing demand for premium tourism and hospitality services.

“We wanted to invest in something that Mombasa will be proud of and also introduce a new product mix for our tourism industry, which has greatly benefited from recent security improvement in the coastal city,” he said.

Deputy President (DP) William Ruto, who visited the new facility on Saturday, said besides boosting tourism, Nyali Golf View Residence fits into the national government’s plan on housing which he said is a key pillar in the big four development agenda of food security, affordable housing, universal healthcare and manufacturing. Local experts played a major role in the construction of ‘this fabulous building’ as plumbers, masons and electrical engineers who graduated from local technical institutions were involved.

Mombasa Deputy Governor William Kingi, who represented governor Hassan Ali Joho, said the port city is open for investments that support tourism. “Our mandate is to create a conducive environment that can attract investors to Mombasa,” he said. “Millions of people visit the county each year making it imperative that we build infrastructure and facilities that can meet their needs,” Dr Kingi said.

The facility already has 85 per cent occupancy. Offering a terrace, each unit is air conditioned and offers a dining area and a seating area with a satellite flat-screen TV and a balcony with sea views is offered in each unit. The furnished holiday self-catering units feature a bright and airy living room with high vaulted ceilings, fully equipped kitchen and dining rooms.

The building  has  two- and three bedroom duplexes and all have semi-detached guest wings. The highly anticipated multi-residential tower has set new benchmarks in architectural excellence and luxuries amenities for visitors seeking a stylish serviced apartment option.


Dr Benedict Mutuku the Chief Executive Officer of Goldwyne Consult, the agent managing the new property, said they are committed to luxury experiences for guests. Dr Mutuku said the new hybrid residential building also boasts of a presidential suite.

He said the luxury hotel apartment consist of furnished and unfurnished rooms noting that the holiday apartments will help plug demand for beds in Mombasa during peak holiday seasons. “We have infinite pool on the 12th floor, three viewing decks on the 12th and 13th floor and we also have a backup generator that not only serves the common area but will give tenants full backup in their houses including their electronic appliances,” he said.

Mutuku said the modern facility will delight the most seasoned travelers with state-of-the-art gymnasium and swimming pool making it a perfect base for domestic and international guests alike.

The development will also diversify MKU’s income streams and establish an endowment fund that will help finance its activities in the long term.
