Parents, pupils stop police from evicting a teacher : The Standard

Learning was disrupted for five hours when police stormed a school to evict a teacher. Parents and pupils of Bugute Primary School in Ikolomani sub-county confronted the officers who had come to arrest the deputy head teacher, Carolyne Amwayi (pictured). Ms Amwayi had allegedly continued to report to school despite being interdicted by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). Area OCPD Bernastein Shari led the police in trying to evict her while classes were going on at 12pm.

Police could be heard telling her they have instructions to evict her since she was no longer an employee of TSC. “You were sacked by TSC and you are not supposed to be in school. We have instructions to have you arrested,” shouted one of the officers. Interdiction letter The commotion attracted the attention of teachers, pupils and parents, who came to her rescue and chased away the police. The officers shot in the air as they retreated.

Amwayi said it was a witch-hunt meant to embarrass her in front of her colleagues and pupils. “I was interdicted by the sub-county director of TSC, Benedict Wekesa, unprocedurally since I had attended a Knut meeting. Her office knew I had gone for the meeting and yet when I came back, they handed me an interdiction letter.” Ms Wekesa, who was alleged to have sent the police, declined to comment. “I cannot give such sensitive information to the media.” Mr Shari also declined to comment.
