- Sierra Leone fans subjected the Lone Star of Liberia to physical attacks ahead of their second leg clash of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

- The Liberian team had to flee the scene before authorities intervening

- They won 3-1 in the reverse match played in Monrovia

Liberia president George Weah has taken to Facebook to condemn a recent attack on the country's national football team by angry fans in Sierra Leone.

The Lone Star of Liberia are currently in Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown, to honour the second leg of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Liberia won the first leg of the tie played in Monrovia 3-1 at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex.

The team has been camping at the Siaka Steven Stadium in preparation for the rematch but had their sessions interrupted by angry supporters who pelted them with stones.

Videos from the incident that have since surfaced online show the supporters attempting to block Liberia's team bus from leaving the scene before authorities intervening.

"It is sad when what is supposed to be the most beautiful and unifying game turn into violence, thus causing supporters to attack players in this 21st century," president Weah posted on Facebook.

He further narrated how the Liberian team once fell victim to similar attacks in Congo ahead of an Africa Cup of Nations clash that they went on to win 1-0.

"As former Technical Director of the Lone Star, I witnessed similar incident in Congo, Brazzaville; where we were stoned out of the training ground," he recalled.
"This incident compelled us to train at our hotel between the trees, but such intimidation did not stop us from defeating the host 1-0 to qualify for the African Cup of Nations," he added.

The former football star went on to challenge the Liberian team to remain calm and focused ahead of their rematch scheduled for Sunday, September 8.
