Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga says if elected as president, he will fast track the construction of the Lake Victoria Ring Road as part of his elaborate infrastructural framework to spur regional cross-border trade.
Odinga who was speaking on the 2nd day of his Western Kenya vote hunt also said he will give Busia and Malaba towns a modern stature.
The Azimio brigade pitched camp in Busia County holding rallies and stopovers across the county, including the commissioning of Busia County Azimio offices.
Led by the coalition’s presidential nominee Raila Odinga, the leaders first held a consultative forum in Butula where he was presented with a memorandum detailing issues the locals want to be addressed by the coalition should it form the next government.
Leaders who accompanied the former prime minister however took issue with Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala over his remarks about police.
Malala said intelligent members of society, who pass exams with good grades, should be sponsored to pursue more “meaningful” careers and leave the “uneducated and the dropouts” to scramble for vacancies in the police service.
Malala said, “the only skill that police officers need is the ability to carry a firearm”.
The National Police Service has since taken exception to remarks by the Kakamega Senator.
In a statement, spokesman Bruno Shioso described the remarks as outrageous and unwarranted and demeaned the police.
Shioso stated that the service is a noble profession and Malala’s remarks “are only aimed at scandalizing a noble profession deployed for the good of the public.”
“We are more disappointed given that these unfortunate remarks were made by a leader we not only hold in high esteem but one we also continually provide round the clock protection with pride and competency,” he stated.
He urged all officers and Kenyans at large to ignore such negative sentiments which he said are only aimed at causing disaffection amongst officers of a security sector entity and treat them with the contempt they deserve.
Meanwhile, Odinga’s running mate Martha Karua was in Nyandarua County where she urged voters not to buy into empty campaign promises being sold by their political opponents.
