Creation of small scale circular industries is the ultimate solution for waste management in Kenya.

This is according to the National Environmental Management Authority chairman, John Konchella who says the government will formulate policies and legal frameworks that will support circular economies for recycling companies.

In 2017, the National Environmental Management Authority-NEMA, banned plastic carrier bags cautioning that single-usage of the bags would eventually lead to heavy environmental consequences due to poor disposal.

The authority further provided alternatives and proposed woven bags as substitutes.

Two years later, NEMA issued another directive banning some of the woven bags over quality issues.

Nonetheless, for plastic bottles, there seems to be room for economic benefit.

According to the National Environmental Management Authority chairman, John Konchella, the ultimate solution for managing such waste is establishment of small scale recycling companies.

The NEMA chair says the waste management companies would not only eliminate waste from the environment but also create jobs.

According to Watamu Marine Association development manager, Steve Trot plastic waste has value and for that reason there is need for concerted collaboration within the plastic bottles production value chain.

Waste management has been a vexed issue in Kenya and now stakeholders are working round the clock to ensure it is a thing of the past.
