Sensational Noah Kibet and Abel Kipsang the only Kenyan winners in Doha as the 2022 Diamond League kicks off



Reigning 1500M world indoor champion Abel Kipsang and 800 meters world indoor silver medalist ,Noah Kibet were the only Kenyan winners on Friday night as the 2022 Diamond league season kicked off in Doha Qatar.

Kipsang emerged victorious in 1500 meters ,outsprinting world champion Timothy Cheruiyot in the final 50 meters  ,barely a week after clinching  the Kip Keino Classic title.

Kipsang crossed the finish  line in 3 minutes 35.70 secs ,followed by Cheruiyot who was competing for the first time this year registering 3 minutes 36.16 seconds , while Tedesse Lemmi from Ethiopia finished 3rd
in a time of 3 minutes 37.06 seconds.

World under 20 silver medalist in 800 meters Noah Kibet ,continued with his best form winning the two laps race ,registering his 1st Diamond league win after clocking 1 minute 49.35 seconds, followed by Peter Bol from Australia in a time of 1minute 49.35 secs, while Canadian Marco Arop finished 3rd in 1 minute 49.51 secs.

Reigning Olympic champion in 3000M steeplechase Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco  registered a photo finish win against Lamecha Girma of Ethiopia crossing the finish line in 8 minutes 9.66 secs ,0.01 seconds ahead of Girma, while Kenyan Abraham Kibiwott finished 3rd in 8 minutes 16.40 secs .

Last year’s diamond league winner Francine Niyonsaba from Burundi outsprinted 1500M Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon in the final lap to emerge victorious in 3000 meters clocking 8 minutes 37.71 secs.

Kipyegon came home 2nd in 8 minutes 38.05 secs ,while Jessica Hull of Australia finished a distance 3rd in 8 minutes 40.97 seconds .

The 2nd leg of diamond league will be held on 21st May in Birmingham UK.
