Harambee Starlets match-winner Gentrix Shikangwa believes Kenya can make it to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after eliminating Ghana in the third round.
Starlets staged a fight to down their opponents in extra time with Shikangwa scoring the decisive penalty and while admitting that it was a good feeling to down Ghana, the striker said the win gives them the much-needed confidence in their next assignment in the qualifiers.
“It’s a good feeling of course since its Ghana. They are one of the best teams in the continent so the win is huge for us. We held them away from home and had the belief that we could down them at home so I’m happy that everything went on as we expected.
Reach Olympics
“We can reach the Olympics because if we could do it against then it means we could do it against anybody. It gives us the belief that we can make it (to the Olympics),” Shikangwa said after the game.
The striker further said that it was no fluke and the result was the fruits of the hard training they have been put through by the team’s coaches.
“I don’t think there was anything extraordinary we did. The coach told us to train hard because of the opponent and we did just that. The result is just a product of putting in the shift in training,” she added.
Next for Shikangwa and team is a tie against Zambia who eliminated Botswana in the third round.
