The government will by March distribute an extra 10 million textbooks for grade one to three to support the competency-based curriculum.
Early childhood and basic Education PS Belio Kipsang said the books are in addition to the 12.5 million that have already been distributed for the three grades.
The already distributed books are for Early Grade Literacy and numeracy textbooks for English, Kiswahili and mathematics.
Kipsang said the additional books will cover environmental activities, hygiene and nutrition activities, Christian, Hindu and Islamic religious education and movement and creative activities.
“The government, through the curriculum, aims at making children able to do things that are useful to their growth and development,” Kipsang said.
He spoke on Wednesday during a classroom observation on the teaching and learning of the new curriculum at Kieleeleni Primary School in Mbooni East subcounty, Makueni county.
Kipsang said the textbooks will help ensure that the curriculum is delivered well.
The PS also officiated the opening of a workshop on Early Grade Literacy (Tusome) programme for teachers in the county.
The Tusome programme aims at improving the teaching and learning of reading and writing in English and Kiswahili and general literacy.
The competency-based 2-6-3-3-3 curriculum was rolled out this month in Pre-primary I and II and Grades I to III.
The rollout followed a piloting phase last year across 33,000 public and private primary schools.
