Safaricom users this morning took to social media to report a ‘glitch’ that saw them subscribe to the telco’s platinum data plan for free. Safaricom has four platinum data plans for its subscribers sold at Sh10,000, Sh5000, Sh3,000 and Sh2,000. The overjoyed users shared screenshots of their exploits on the social media, urging others to join in the frenzy. @tamurai_inc tweeted:

It was a joy short-lived as, some subscribers shared screenshots from Safaricom that informed them, “the Platinum data plan you had purchased illegally shall be deducted from your Mpesa account.” It is not the first time that Kenyans have taken advantage of a hitch on Safaricom to get freebies.

Last year, the telco suffered a systems failure on the administration of Bonga Points which saw some people redeem their inflated points for rewards. The system error tripled subscribers’ Bonga points then.  Safaricom is yet to comment on the glitch.
