Manchester United have completed the signing of Wales winger Daniel James from Swansea.

The 21-year-old has signed a five-year contract, with the option to extend for a further year, to become manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first signing at Old Trafford.

James, a graduate of the Swansea academy, scored five goals in 38 appearances during an impressive 2018-19 campaign with the Championship side.

Solskjaer told United’s website: “Daniel is an exciting young winger with lots of skills, vision, exceptional pace and a good work ethic. He had a great season with Swansea City and has all the attributes needed to become a Manchester United player.

“We are delighted he has signed with our club and we are all looking forward to working with him. This is the perfect environment for Daniel to continue his development.”

James said: “For me, it’s surreal, really. I think every kid grows up wanting to play for Manchester United. I never thought I’d be able to play against them, never mind play for them, so it’s surreal, and I’m really looking forward to it. I can’t wait to get started.”

Swansea chairman Trevor Birch told Swansea’s website: “We are obviously hugely disappointed to lose a player of Daniel’s quality, especially after such a fantastic breakthrough season for us and the enjoyment he gave to those watching him.

“However, given the level of those performances and the fact he has one year remaining on his contract, it was inevitable that once a club of the calibre of Manchester United came calling it would be virtually impossible to hold on to him.”

James is unlikely to be the last new face at Old Trafford this summer, with Solskjaer expected to make a raft of changes following a disappointing campaign.

A centre back is high on his priority list, with Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng and in demand Ajax wonder kid Matthjis de Ligt all linked with a move to United.

The likes of Adrien Rabiot, Thomas Meunier, Joao Felix, Bruno Fernandes and Sebastien Haller’s names have also been mooted as targets in recent weeks.

Solskajer’s first signing follows in the footsteps of his predecessors Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal, David Moyes and Sir Alex Ferguson.

Mourinho’s first recruit was Eric Bailly from Villarreal, while van Gaal’s spree began with Ander Herrera – who is joining Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

Moyes struggled to recruit in his only summer at the Red Devils, with Marouane Fellaini his only high profile signing, but Uruguayan right-back Guillermo Varera was the first through the door.

Meanwhile, legendary boss Ferguson splashed a healthy £250,000 to lure Viv Anderson from Arsenal in 1987.
