Harambee Stars coach Sebastian Migne has defended his final 23 man team ahead of next week’s Africa Cup of Nations finals in Egypt.

The Frenchman dropped four players on Monday night as he named his final squad for the tournament.

“At the end of the day, we had to remain with 23 players and looked at everything including team balance, behaviour and the future. We are satisfied with what we have,” he said.

Migne admitted that Brian Mandela’s injury was a major setback to the team as the South Africa based player had established himself in the side.

“The injury to Mandela was a big surprise to him and to us. If he was available, Joseph Okumu should have stayed at home as he was our key player in defence. We have to try and find a solution going into the tournament,” he said.

Migne further revealed that his team is taking shape ahead of the first Africa Cup of Nations match against Algeria on June 23.

“We have already started thinking about Algeria and how we will line-up against them. We are already living our dream by qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations finals and hope the dream will continue in the next one month,” said the coach.

He termed Saturday’s friendly match against Democratic Republic of Congo in Madrid as one of the most important fixtures ahead of the tournament proper.

“It is an important match for us and will give us an idea of exactly where we are as a team. We will try and avoid injuries and see one or two players in high-level situations. They are a good opponent to compete against,” he said.

He emphasized the need to keep a positive mentality and for the players to be able to compete at a high level on a consistent basis.

“Being in France has given me an opportunity to work with the players at a close level and be able to push them to work at a high level consistently. I want to urge the fans to stand behind this team because what we are building together will take time to complete.

“In the last one year, it has been a great run of results and we will try and give it going.”

Pogba’s time to “move elsewhere”

Published

on

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba suggested on Sunday that he could be open to a move away from the Premier League side, telling reporters in Tokyo that now “could be a good time to have a new challenge somewhere else”

The Frenchman has been linked in the British media with a move to Real Madrid to work with coach Zinedine Zidane, or with a return to his former club Juventus.

Pogba’s time at Manchester United has coincided with some insipid performances on the pitch and organisational turmoil at the club.

“Like you said, there is a lot of talking and a lot of thinking as well,” Pogba, 26, told reporters in Tokyo.

“For me I have been for three years in Manchester and have been doing great; some good moments and some bad moments, like everybody. Like everywhere else.

“After this season and everything that happened this season, with my season being my best season as well… I think for me it could be a good time to have a new challenge somewhere else.”

“I am thinking of this: to have a new challenge somewhere else.”

Pogba, who moved to Old Trafford from Juventus for a then-world record transfer fee of 89.3 million pounds in August 2016, has seen Jose Mourinho replaced as coach by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during his time at the clu

Kiptum, Kwamesa defend Deaf Half Marathon titles

Published

on

Daniel Kiptum from Nandi County retained his title as the winner of the sixth edition of the Deaf Half Marathon held today, June 16, 2019 in Kericho.

The Gold medalist of 2017 Sumsun Deaflympic Games held in Turkey finished first in an impressive time of 1:11.16 edging out Lucas Wandia who came in second in a time of 1:11.58 and David Njeru who finished third in 1:12.00.

“I am happy to have defended my tittle successfully in the today’s marathon. Having elite athletes in the marathon made the completion very stiff. I will continue training hard ahead of the 1st Africa Deaf Athletics Championships which will be held in Kasarani in September,” said Daniel Kiptum.

In the women’s 21km category, Juster Moraa Kwamesa successfully retained her tittle cutting the tape in 1:42.01. Following closely was Priscah Naibin at 1:42.09 with Rebeca Matiko clocking 1:55.5 to finish third.

The annual event also included the 10KM races for both men and women where Geoffrey Kamia won in the men’s category in a time of 36:00 followed closely by Gilbert Kirui in 36:02 and Dennis Kiprop in third position at 37:00.

Kakamega’s Jentrix Dindi won in the women’s 10KM in a time of 47:46 with Mercy Moraa and Viola Jelimo coming in second and third places at 47:50 and 48:18 respectively.

The event saw the winners in the half marathon walk away with KES.100, 000, KES 50,000 and KES 30,000 respectively. The 10KM race saw the first three awarded KES 50,000, KES 40,000 and KES 30,000 respectively in cash prizes. Besides the cash prizes, the winners also got a direct qualification to the 1st African Deaf Championship scheduled to be held in Nairobi.

“We have had a good event today and we congratulate the winners. The event is of great significance in our calendar because it lets us know the form our athletes are in before the season begins. Those who finished in the top three in both 21KM and 10KM have automatically qualified for the 1st Africa Deaf Athletics Championships which will be held at Kasarani later this year,” said Bernard Banja, Secretary General, Deaf Athletics Association of Kenya (DAAK).

Safaricom sponsored the race to a tune of KES 2.5 million. The race brings together deaf athletes from all corners of the country providing them a platform to display their talent.

Pogba has confirmed his intentions to leave United [Reuters]

Paul Pogba has publicly admitted for the first time he wants to leave Manchester United this summer.

Speaking to reporters in Tokyo, the Red Devils midfielder said it ‘could be a good time to have a new challenge’.

Pogba continues to be linked with an exit from Old Trafford after a tumultuous campaign for the Frenchman last term.

He fell out with boss Jose Mourinho before the Portuguese was axed in December, before a turnaround in form following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s return to the club.

But his performances dropped off again towards the end of the season, with Real Madrid keen to take him to the Bernabeu.
Juventus have also been linked with signing Pogba for a second time, but Real boss Zinedine Zidane is desperate to seal the deal.

“Like you said, there is a lot of talking and a lot of thinking as well,” Pogba, 26, said.

Pogba joined United for the second time in an £89.3million deal in August 2016.

He has scored 24 times in 92 appearances for the club and was the only player outside of Manchester City and Liverpool to be named in the PFA Premier League team of the year in 2018-19.
