Two medical personnel arrested over negligence in Athi River

Two medical personnel at the Shalom Hospital in Athi River have been arrested as investigations into a suspected case of negligence at the facility continue.

This is after a video doing rounds on social media showed a woman was left to give birth at the facility’s reception area as nurses watched and enjoyed their tea.

Speaking to KBC on the telephone, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua said those arrested are Edna Nyarangi and Thomas Ndolo.

Nyarangi was serving at the Hospital but is not registered as a nurse by the nursing council.

Ndolo, who is the Hospital administrator, was arrested for hiring quarks at the facility.

Action was also taken against four other employees at the Hospital namely John Ndege, Samuel Ongoya, Kelvin Samita, and Dr Mutembei Itunga.

Governor Mutua said a joint clinical audit will be done on Monday at 9 am on staffing and Standard Operating Procedures.

He invited the office of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to conduct further investigations, with the possibility of charging the Directors/Owners of Shalom hospital with Criminal Negligence and other crimes.

Mutua said his administration will review an audit report on the Hospital in a month’s time, with a view of cancelling the Hospital’s operating license if no improvement will have been made by then.
