Good morning.

(If you don’t already get California Today delivered to your inbox, here’s the sign-up.)

Yesterday, our visual editors took us on a trip through the Bay Area’s music scenes through the decades.

Today, we’re visiting Southern California with images of some of the state’s most iconic artists.

As always, feel free to send us your picks for our California Soundtrack playlist. Have a song you love that makes you feel connected to the Golden State?

Write 100 words telling us why and email us at [email protected], along with your name, age and where you live, and we may publish your thoughts in a future newsletter.

We often link to sites that limit access for nonsubscribers. We appreciate your reading Times coverage, but we also encourage you to support local news if you can.

Back in July, we put together an itinerary for an expandable road trip north from San Francisco toward Mendocino, and back through Sonoma.

This week, our colleagues on the Travel desk published this guide to a road trip for those who want to venture even farther north to the rugged, forbidding Lost Coast, where cellphones don’t work and crowds are sparse.

If you’re craving cooler weather and fog, this may be your best late summer escape — just be careful on the roads.

Jill Cowan grew up in Orange County, graduated from U.C. Berkeley and has reported all over the state, including the Bay Area, Bakersfield and Los Angeles — but she always wants to see more. Follow along here or on Twitter, @jillcowan.
