Drama as Nyeri hawkers confront governor – Weekly Citizen

Nyeri governor Mutahi Kahiga was confronted by angry hawkers along busy Gakere road in Nyeri town when he tried to explain the relocation plan for hawkers to another site to operate their businesses.
The governor was spotted in his walkabout along the streets by hawkers who stopped him to explain the relocation plan but a cross section of highly charged hawkers who had milled in their hundreds around the area could not allow the governor say anything and booed and shouted him down before he was whisked away by his security team.

Consequently, his convoy left the place driving in a high speed for safety to unknown destination. “We cannot allow any nonsense from the governor. We know for sure he has been compromised by traders operating their businesses along Gakere road at the expense of the helpless hawkers,” shouted a hawker Wambui Githiuti.
She said that common decency had been thrown out of the window and replaced with political thuggery, vindictiveness and greed.
The hawkers said the governor’s executive committee met to formulate anti-hawkers policy and that is the reason there was no public participation in the exercise that was carried out before the policy was made.
