Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has disbanded the Firearm Licensing and Control Board and directed Kenyans in possession of firearms to acquire new firearm permits.

Matiang’i says the move is parts of the government efforts to enhance security across the country.

With the country reporting increased incidents of criminality amid reports that some licensed gun holders could be working in cahoots with criminal elements, Matiang’i has disbanded the board in a move he says will enhance transparency.

Matiang’i has at the same time cautioned law enforcement officers committing extrajudicial executions, police brutality and any involvement in crime saying officers found to culpable will be dealt with accordingly.

Speaking during a law and governance stakeholder’s forum, Matiang’I assured of speedy investigations into genuine cases of extrajudicial killings.

Matiang’I says his ministry in partnership with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority is developing a tracking database for the cases to ensure they are expedited.

Matiang’I says the government has already embarked on electronic storage of evidence in order to clean up and clear up police stations over the next six months as part of efforts aimed at improving the country’s justice system
