Deputy President William Ruto is a text book example of how the wheels of fortune can change for some individuals, what with his humble background and having manoeuvred his way from the traps of poverty to the trappings of power.

Well, it seems the former chicken seller has also lifted some other hustlers along the way as revealed by Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga who recently testified how the shrewd politician changed her life.

In her own words, the youthful lawmaker indicated that she was doing a bedsheets retail business when Ruto crossed her path, and as the cliché goes, the rest is history.

Speaking during the end year party for Pitchface, a company owned by South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro, Omanga narrated the events that culminated in her surprise job.

“When my appointment came, I had bought 30 bed sheets which I was going to sell.” She said.

Adding, “I was at Kings Collections shop trying to bargain with the Indian seller so that I could make some profit.”

It is at that point that a call came in and the person on the other end introduced himself as a Mr Chirchir. Turns out the surprise caller was the then Energy Cabinet Secretary Davies Chirchir.

“We have an AGM tomorrow for KenGen and you have been chosen to be one of the directors,” the CS dropped the surprise.

And that’s how her life took a turn for the best, becoming a household name in the country’s political arena.

Omanga started her politics in DP Ruto’s defunct United Republican Party (URP), which later saw her get nominated to the Senate after losing out in Jubilee Party Nairobi women rep nominations.
