Mob lynches suspect over spate of robberies in Naivasha

An angry mob lynched a suspect believed to be behind a spate of robberies in Naivasha.

Word went round that there were thugs planning to attack Site estate. Residents laid an ambush in the wee hours of Thursday morning.

Witness James Kimani said at least five thugs armed with machetes and rungus raided the home of a prominent Naivasha businessman.

Angered by the rising cases of robberies, Kimani said, locals beat up the attackers with all manner of weapons.

Three suspects escaped, one was lynched and police arrested another suspect.

“Police saved the suspect they arrested from being lynched. This should serve as a warning to those who escaped that we will not rest until we find them,” Kimani said.

He said due to the increase in insecurity, residents have formed groups that will be patrolling the area at night.

Kimani said some residents, who have been victims of robbery, identified the lynched suspect as one of their attackers.

Naivasha police boss Samuel Waweru said the suspect who was arrested is helping with investigations. He will be taken to court once the probe is complete.

At the same time, passengers were injured in an accident involving a Canter and a matatu along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.

In the accident that occurred at Ihindu trading centre, the matatu hit the rear side of the Canter.

Witness Peter Kirika said it was foggy and there was poor visibility.

“The matatu driver was going uphill and did not notice the Canter that was ahead,” he said.

Police boss Waweru said the injured, four of them in serious condition, were taken to various hospitals in Naivasha.
