MPs clash over ‘Kalonzo kingpin’ debate : The Standard

Supremacy wars pitting three Ukambani governors against Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka resurfaced on Monday when two MPs clashed at a public forum.

Nine legislators had turned up at Kangundo DEB Primary School grounds on invitation by Machakos County MP Joyce Kamene for the launch of National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) programme. It is here that bare-knuckle politics played out.
Trouble began when Kitui Woman Representative Irene Kasalu fired a salvo at the three governors – Alfred Mutua (Machakos), Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni) and Charity Ngilu (Kitui) – accusing them of disrespecting Kalonzo, who she claimed was the undisputed king of Ukambani region.
But in a swift rejoinder, Kangundo legislator Fabian Muli told off Ms Kasalu, saying the narrative of “political kingpin” was old-fashioned.

“Away with this nonsense about political kingpin. As a community, we need to start looking at things differently and objectively,” said the Kangundo MP.
High voltage politics have dominated the Ukambani region for the past few weeks following what is seen as open rebellion by the three governors who claim Kalonzo has achieved nothing for the several decades he has been in political leadership.
