Thursday January 17, 2019 – The Judiciary has moved to stamp its authority in the ongoing fight against corruption after it jailed one of the suspects in the National Youth Service scandal. Selesio Karanja, the Supply Chain Assistant, has been jailed by the court over a fraudulent Kshs47.6 million tender. He was slapped with a Sh 4 million fine failure to which he will serve four years in jail. While issuing the ruling on Thursday, Milimani Anti-Corruption Court Chief Magistrate, Lawrence Mugambi, ruled that Karanja had failed to uphold integrity and transparency in his duties leading to the irregular awarding of the tender to an unqualified company. "He betrayed public trust which he was to safeguard by engaging in corrupt practice to manipulate procurement of goods at a public entity.” "Although he is a church elder, the honour bestowed by the church, he is expected to be a person of integrity and not to be involved in criminal act acts of fraud perpetrated by the smacks of dishonesty in the discharge of his public duties," Mugambi held. Karanja was further barred from holding any public office. The Judiciary has been blamed by many quarters as a stumbling block in the war against graft, but not anymore.
